No big tree grows into a large tree right away after being planted as a seedling; it is the passage of time that creates the rings, with them growing outward layer by layer. Lesson: To succeed, you must give yourself time. Time is the accumulation and extension of experience. 2 The second condition to become a big tree: stay still. There is no such thing as a tree that is planted here in the first year and there in the second year and then becomes a big tree; to grow into a large tree, it must stand firm through wind and frost, rain and snow over thousands of years. It is through countless trials of wind and frost, rain and snow that a great tree is ultimately formed. Insight: To succeed, one must remain steadfast despite all challenges, holding fast to one’s beliefs and focusing on internal strength – only then can success be achieved! The third condition for becoming a great tree is: roots. Trees have millions of roots – thick roots, thin roots, and tiny roots – that extend deep into the ground, constantly absorbing nutrients to help them grow. There is absolutely no big tree without roots. Insight: To succeed, one must keep learning*. Only by continuously improving oneself and establishing a solid foundation can one ensure that one’s career remains successful over the long term. 4 The fourth condition for becoming a big tree: grow upward. No large tree grows only to the sides, becoming thicker rather than taller; it must first develop a trunk before growing thin branches, continuing to grow upward. Lesson: To succeed, one must look upward. Only by moving upward can one gain more space. 5 The fifth condition to become a big tree: toward the sunlight. No tree grows toward darkness, avoiding the light. Sunlight is the hope for the growth of trees; large trees know that they must strive to get more sunlight in order to have a chance to grow taller. Lesson: To succeed, one must set a correct goal and work hard toward it; only then can desires become reality.
