On the evening of April 3rd, Beijing time, after 7 intense matches, the finals of the 2017-2018 Chinese Women’s Volleyball Super League came to an end in Shanghai. In the deciding match, facing the regular-season champions Shanghai Guangming Youbei, which had the home advantage, Tianjin Bohai Bank, which was in a desperate situation, managed to hold on despite falling behind by large margins twice, and once again managed to turn the game around with a score of 3-2. The scores across the five sets were 21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22, and 16-14. With this victory, Tianjin secured a 4-3 overall score in the final series played over 7 matches, winning its 11th league title after two years; Shanghai, on the other hand, suffered its fifth defeat in trying to win the championship in the past 10 years.
Tianjin’s victory was thanks to the team’s championship experience, along with Li Yingying, a newcomer who has performed exceptionally well this year; as a result, the team is on an upward trajectory. The Shanghai women’s volleyball team, on the other hand, seems to be aging, with its foreign players also being experienced athletes. Moreover, they rely too much on these foreign players in critical moments, which means that their opponents don’t need to think carefully about their defense strategies – they can simply focus on blocking those foreign players. It can be said that this team still needs to be strengthened.
