Why are all the snacks on the streets sweetened?

A few days ago, for breakfast I ate fried dough sticks and drank tofu pudding. The fried dough sticks were very sweet; on my way back, I bought a bag of popcorn, which turned out to be sweet as well. There was also a bag of corn flakes, which are called \"Kangleguo\" here, and those were sweet too. Eating too much of them made my mouth feel bitter – it must be the sweetness from aspartame. Brushing my teeth didn’t help, and my mouth still felt sweet even when I went to bed at night.
