The rime in Jilin is truly amazing.

Jilin’s rime ice is, along with Guilin’s landscapes, Yunnan’s Stone Forest, and the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, one of China’s four great natural wonders; yet Jilin’s rime ice is the most unique among these four natural sites. The magnificent and uniquely charming spectacle of rime in Jilin has won the admiration of countless domestic and foreign tourists. At the same time, rime in Jilin also makes significant contributions to the natural environment and human health. Whenever rime appears, the ten-mile-long embankment along the Songhua River in Jilin turns into a scene where \"it seems as if a spring breeze has blown overnight, with thousands of trees in bloom like pear blossoms.\" Willows bear silver flowers, and pines produce silver chrysanthemums, taking people to a picturesque fairyland. *During his inspection in Jilin in 1991, the comrade happened to witness the magnificent phenomenon of rime ice, and he gladly penned the words: \"Snow-covered willows by the cold river, trees like jade and flowers like crystal – Jilin’s rime ice is truly as famous as it is said.\" In 1998, he composed another poem that read: \"The cold river and snow-covered willows reveal a clear sky; jade-like trees and beautiful flowers fill the scene with the charm of spring.\" After going through countless hardships, such beauty is achieved; all things in the world arise from difficulty. In Jilin, every winter, although the surface of Songhua Lake freezes over to become as hard as iron, the water several dozen meters deep beneath the ice remains at a temperature of 4°C. The temperature difference between this water and the surface is usually around 30°C, which results in sections of the river that remain unfrozen even dozens of kilometers downstream from the urban area. In Jilin during the frozen seasons, all plants wither away and everything loses its vitality; yet the wonder of rime ice always appears in this northern city as if \"a spring breeze had blown overnight, causing thousands of trees to bloom like pear blossoms.\" The graceful willows with their delicate branches, and the pine and cypress trees adorned with blooming silver chrysanthemums – all in such diverse forms that it’s hard to take it all in.
