The Lantern Festival, also known as the Festival of Lights, Yuanxi, or Shangyuan Festival, is celebrated on the first full moon night of the year – the 15th day of the first lunar month. At least since the Sui Dynasty, the Lantern Festival has featured a wealth of traditional activities, developing a distinct cultural identity; thereafter, the festive traditions have become even more diverse. During festivals, people walk on bridges under the moonlight, admire lanterns, solve riddles related to lanterns, set off fireworks, perform dragon and lion dances, ride on dry boats, walk on stilts, and dance the Yangge dance. The Lantern Festival has become the most lively of all China’s traditional festivals.
