The world is big, and there are all kinds of birds. On this earth, it’s not just China that exists; there are many other countries as well, such as the UK, the US, Japan, and so on. Each ** is different; their dietary cultures are entirely distinct, but they all have certain local characteristics. Not long ago, foreigners selected the top ten most disgusting foods in the world, with two of them being from China. Some of us eat them regularly without even knowing it – how is that possible? Let’s take a look together.
Snake wine – many ancient Chinese texts describe the practice of soaking snakes in alcohol. It is said that snake wine has the effect of relieving rheumatism. However, putting a live snake into a jar does seem a bit terrifying. Moreover, there are cases where, upon opening the jar containing the snake wine, the snake wasn’t dead and even bit its owner; it’s quite frightening to think about.
Raw eggs – this is a delicacy in Southeast Asia, where eggs of chickens or ducks that are about to hatch are eaten straight away. Since the outline of chicks and ducklings has already formed, many people still hesitate to eat them.
Live octopuses are not only popular in Korea; even Japanese people find them delicious. However, the slimy legs of a living octopus are intimidating to look at, and it’s very difficult to eat them raw. But for them, this is simply everyday food, and it’s really delicious.
Dried tofu. Did you see the English name for preserved eggs? ““Thousand Year Old Egg” – from this name, it is clear that Westerners hold deep resentment toward Chinese preserved eggs. We often see many mocking videos online of foreigners vomiting after eating preserved eggs, which further deepens the Westerners’ misunderstanding of them.
Crocodile paw is an emerging delicacy that foreigners really like. They say it has a taste that’s a mix of fish and plastic, but some also claim it smells like a toilet!
Civet jelly: In China, many people consider this dessert to be the perfect accompaniment after a meal. This disgusting dish is mainly made of the oviducts of frogs. The reproductive organs of this amphibian are sold in a dried and shrunk state, and when immersed in water, they can swell to 10–15 times their size in the dehydrated state. Then a little sugar is added to give it a special sweetness, the kind that most people expect to find in a dessert.
Are the preserved eggs okay? I heard that stinky tofu is actually left to ferment in a dung bucket for several days, which gives it its pungent smell.
Dried tofu, stinky tofu, and fermented bean curd – I can tolerate these three quite well.
