Texaco gasifier: A pressurized fluidized bed gasification device developed by the American company Texaco Development Company. Industrial operation tests were completed in West Germany in 1979. It is characterized by converting coal into water-coal slurry, which is then fed into a gasifier to undergo a high-temperature gasification reaction with a gasifying agent. The gasification temperature is 1200–1600°C, the operating pressure is 4 MPa; the coal powder concentration in the water-coal slurry is approximately 71% (by mass), with 14–60% of the coal powder particles having a size of less than 90 μm. The carbon conversion rate is 99%. The Texaco gasifier has a vertical cylindrical structure, with its main body divided into two parts: the upper part is the gasification chamber, while the lower part is the radiant waste heat boiler (or quenching section), which is connected to a ash hopper below. After being pressurized by compressors and pumps respectively, oxygen and water-coal slurry enter the furnace through feed nozzles at the top of the gasifier, where they undergo gasification reactions at high temperatures. The generated gas is quenched in a waste heat boiler; after initial cooling, it is drawn out from the middle part. The gasification operation temperature is controlled above the ash melting point of the coal. Ash is discharged through the ash lockhopper. Texaco’s gasification temperature is higher than that of the K-T gasifier, and it operates in a co-current manner, resulting in lower thermal efficiency inside the furnace. Additionally, since it uses water-coal slurry as feed, the carbon dioxide content in the generated gas is high. Therefore, increasing the coal concentration in the water-coal slurry is an important aspect of this gasification method. The coal concentration in water-coal slurry is directly related to the properties, particle size, and particle size distribution of the coal. Adding appropriate additives can reduce the viscosity of water-coal slurry, thereby obtaining a water-coal slurry with a higher concentration. The composition (by volume %) of the gas produced by the Texaco gasifier is: carbon monoxide 44–51, hydrogen 35–36, carbon dioxide 13–18, methane 0.1; it is suitable as a feed gas for the production of ammonia and hydrocarbon-based chemical products. The advantage of the water-coal slurry system is that it is simple and reliable, and can be transported by pumps. However, the water in gasified water coal slurry increases oxygen consumption, which is the main reason for the low efficiency of cold gas generation in the Texaco process. On the other hand, due to the presence of water vapor, a certain degree of conversion occurs in the vaporization furnace, especially on the quenching route, and the water-vapor ratio is suitable for downstream chemical synthesis. Shell requires a more complex gas-phase conveying structure due to the use of pulverized coal as feed. With the Shell furnace and waste boiler process, the water content in the outlet syngas is low, so high-pressure steam must be added to compensate for this. On the other hand, Shell furnaces are limited by their design and can only operate at medium and low pressures, below 45 kilograms. Vaporizers of the same volume can be designed with different pressure levels according to the customer’s requirements. 65 kilograms is common in China. For gasifiers of the same volume, the higher the pressure, the greater the production capacity; however, the cost of valves and other components also increases. Therefore, a decision must be made by taking into account the overall process flow of the plant.
Does using a Texaco stove also depend on the quality of coal?
China’s first Texaco gasifier was put into operation in southern Shandong in 1993, with a pressure rating of 2.8 MPa; it was built as an industrial demonstration unit. Later, Sanyuan and Huaihua also installed Texaco gasifiers, choosing models with a pressure rating of 4.0 MPa, while Weihe used gasifiers with a pressure rating of 6.5 MPa. Since then, many other companies have adopted Texaco gasifiers, generally with a pressure rating of 6.5 MPa; however, the diameter of the reaction section in these gasifiers is 3.2 meters. Nanhua’s gasifier, with a pressure rating of 8.7 MPa, has been in operation for 1 year now!
