Does a liquid ammonia tank need insulation? It was done by the design institute for us; no insulation was used. Is there any problem with that?
The need for insulation depends on whether the surface temperature is below the highest ambient temperature or below the wet-bulb temperature of the pipes and equipment, unless the process requires heat absorption
I’ve seen other liquid ammonia tanks that don’t have insulation, and a layer of white frost could be seen on the outside of the tank. Our liquid ammonia tank also lacks insulation
Liquid ammonia filling does not require insulation; cooling is only necessary if there are specific requirements. Liquid ammonia has a temperature close to room temperature, so no insulation is required. It will get cooler in the summer as well.
In fact, heat retention is also a form of insulation. Liquid ammonia is generally stored at around 1.0 Mpa and 30°C, which is close to the ambient temperature; therefore, insulation is usually not required. However, in summer, if the ambient temperature is high, it can cause the temperature of the stored liquid ammonia to rise, thereby increasing the storage pressure. In mild cases, this leads to higher energy consumption of the ammonia compressor, while in severe cases it can result in an overpressure explosion. Therefore, it is still necessary to install appropriate shading and sun protection devices on liquid ammonia storage tanks.
In fact, whether an ammonia tank needs to be insulated or kept cold depends mainly on the operating conditions. Ammonia at normal pressure has a temperature of -33 degrees; storage tanks are usually double-walled and require insulation, as well as maintenance of ice makers. A pressure of 1.8 MPA corresponds to a liquid ammonia temperature of 45 degrees, and insulation or cooling is generally not required.
Our liquid ammonia is used to generate cooling capacity, so insulation is necessary. A new storage tank was installed recently, but since no insulation has been put in place yet, the cooling effect is much worse
