Currently, the mainstream ammonia-based desulfurization process internationally is the Masulex ammonia desulfurization method from the United States, followed by Japanese methods; there are also such methods in Europe, and China has its own proprietary technologies as well. Among the domestic professional desulfurization companies, Wuhan Kaidi has adopted Masulex technology; in addition, companies such as Heyichang, China Automation, Shanghai Shenchuan, Zhenjiang Jiangnan, Luoyang, and several others are also capable of carrying out ammonia-based desulfurization, and they all have relevant experience in this area. Since I work at a large chemical engineering design institute in Wuhan, where the on-site power plant is equipped with desulfurization facilities, I am quite familiar with Wuhan Kaidi. In terms of technical capabilities and project experience, it is undoubtedly among the best companies in this field. Its only weakness is the lack of experience in ammonia-based desulfurization methods in China; however, given its leadership in wet desulfurization technologies and the strong support provided by Massey Corporation from the United States, it is still the best company in China in this area. Although other desulfurization companies do have some performance records, it is precisely these records that reveal many problems. The biggest issue is that, based on our investigations, none of them have been able to operate stably over a long period of time. This is also the main reason why the ammonia-based method cannot be successfully applied in large-scale units in areas with strict environmental monitoring requirements. At present, the first ammonia-based plant built by Kaidi in collaboration with Qilu Petrochemical is under construction. As for the differences it has compared to domestic ammonia-based plants, we will have to wait and see.
The technologies are not very mature; most of them are adapted from elsewhere. The overall concept of process technology is not very strong; we are still in the process of exploring it. As a technology that has only recently begun to attract attention, it is normal for ammonia-based desulfurization to have various problems. I strongly agree with the opinion above. When new technologies are introduced, there are usually some shortcomings, which is quite normal; after all, from their inception to maturity, these technologies go through a process of continuous improvement and refinement. As long as it’s not intentional concealment or fraud, it’s fine!
