Once the unloading of lignite is complete, the piles of lignite often catch fire on their own. It’s not very visible during the day, but obvious flames and smoke can be seen at night. It’s not safe to use water to extinguish it, as the flames will grow stronger the more water is used. All that can be done now is to spread out the coal piles to help dissipate heat as much as possible. Is there a better way to solve this?

I am involved in the design of processes for drying lignite. Storing dried lignite to prevent spontaneous combustion is another complex issue, and I have been seeking ways to address this problem. What was mentioned above is very useful as a reference; is there any industrial application for these methods?
I’m not quite sure about the difference between lignite and low-sulfur coal. It seems that at our plant, the coal is simply watered down every time. Is it because different boilers require different types of coal, and some boilers cannot use wet coal?

Lignite has a very high water content, making it difficult to dehydrate it; it is even more difficult for it to catch fire on its own. The author must be referring to lignite that has been dried, as otherwise there would be no problem with watering it regularly.
