How to use the grounding ring of an electromagnetic flowmeter correctly As everyone knows, the basic principle of an electromagnetic flowmeter is that it cannot measure non-conductive media; therefore, when plastic pipes are used, our manufacturer provides a grounding ring. The grounding ring of an electromagnetic flowmeter comes into direct contact with the medium through the grounding electrode, and then connects to the instrument flange via this grounding ring, thereby achieving electrical equilibrium with the ground and eliminating interference. The grounding ring of electromagnetic flowmeters is not a panacea either; in some situations, it is not suitable for use. Generally, if the pipeline is made of metal, it may not be necessary to use a grounding ring; connecting the flow meter’s flange to the pipeline and then grounding it will also work well, especially in cases of large diameters. If the diameter is small, it doesn’t matter whether a grounding ring is used or not; the cost difference won’t be significant. Additionally, some users are measuring media that are not highly corrosive, but their pipes are made of non-metallic materials; in such cases, it is necessary to use a grounding ring. Grounding is very important for electromagnetic flowmeters. When using electromagnetic flowmeters to measure highly corrosive media, the pipes are often made of PVC or lined with PTFE; in such cases, electrodes made of precious metals are typically used, such as titanium or tantalum electrodes. However, for large-diameter electromagnetic flowmeters, due to cost considerations, it is not suitable to equip them with grounding rings. In this case, a three-electrode setup is generally chosen, with two electrodes used for measurement and the other one for grounding.
