On September 4, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the \"Guiding Opinions on the Development of Industrial Big Data (Draft for Comment)\\", proposing that by 2025, a resource system, integration system, industrial ecosystem, and governance framework for industrial big data should be established. This would create a closed-loop development model that covers data aggregation and sharing, data-related technologies and products, data integration and applications, as well as data governance, thereby making industrial big data a key factor and innovation driver for the high-quality development of the industry. Breaking down information silos: This year, “industrial Internet” was included in the **work report for the first time**, and it is becoming a key focus area for internet giants; industrial big data serves as the foundation of the industrial Internet. In the eyes of industry experts, the release of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s draft for comments is timely. The development of industrial big data can break down the \"data silos\" existing in this industry, having a significant impact on the production methods, operation models, and ecosystem of the manufacturing sector. For example, at the finals of the 3rd \"China Industrial Big Data Innovation Competition\" held on July 22-23 this year, Hu Xiang, an industrial algorithm engineer from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University, succeeded in solving the problem of \"predicting the failure of rotor components in large rotating machinery\" through the integration and processing of data. In the future, powerful industrial data will play an even greater role in the manufacturing industry. At present, China has a certain foundation for the development and application of industrial big data, but there are still issues such as insufficient exploitation of data value, an urgent need to enhance technical capabilities, and a need to boost corporate enthusiasm. Industry experts point out that the biggest problem at present is the lack of data, due to the inadequate basic underlying control devices and facilities, such as communication systems for data collection and sensor equipment. To promote the rapid development of industrial big data, the infrastructure must be gradually improved. On the enterprise control side, network infrastructure, communication facilities, basic computing, storage, and switching capabilities, software such as MES, end-to-end devices, and sensors for data collection are all required; these elements will drive the development of industries such as cloud computing, edge computing, and intelligent sensors. Sensors are in demand. Documents issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also mention the need to promote the comprehensive collection of industrial big data, and to support enterprises in accelerating the deployment of digital tools and devices such as sensors, radio frequency identification systems, CNC machines, robots, and gateways, thereby improving the ability to collect data from production sites, including data on equipment, product identifiers, and factory environments. The transmission and interaction of industrial big data will drive the use of technologies such as 5G and NB-IoT in industrial applications, facilitate the large-scale deployment of IPv6, and upgrade the internal and external networks of industrial enterprises. Some say that sensors have become the “heart” of the Internet of Things, smart industry, smart devices, autonomous driving, and so on. Among them, smart sensors have replaced traditional sensors to become the mainstream in the market (accounting for 70%), as they possess the ability to collect, process, and exchange information; they are the result of the integration of sensors with microprocessors. On August 24, 2019, the Sensor and Internet of Things Summit Forum of the China International Intelligent Industry Expo was held in Beibei District, Chongqing, where the Chongqing Sensor Specialized Industry Base was officially inaugurated. The base will vigorously develop sensor technology and the sensor industry, thereby promoting the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries as well as the growth of strategic emerging industries. At the same time, **the local authorities have also issued a series of documents to promote the development of the sensor industry. According to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the market size for sensors in China has seen rapid growth in recent years; it reached 147.2 billion yuan in 2018, representing a year-on-year increase of 13.2%, with double-digit growth rates observed over the past five years. It should be noted, however, that the development of ultra-thin touch paperless recorders in our country started relatively late, and its progress in high-end sensors lags behind that of developed countries. Looking at the entire market, there are currently 25 sensor-related companies listed in China, with 12 of them focusing on smart sensors. Only 2 of these companies generate annual revenues of over 10 billion yuan; therefore, there is still significant room for growth in this market. There is still a long way to go before industrial big data can be collected, shared, and utilized.
