3 deaths in Wuxi overpass collapse accident; preliminary analysis suggests overload was the cause

At around 18:10 on October 10, an accident involving the overturning of the bridge deck occurred at K135 on National Highway 312 in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, on the overpass over Xigang Road. The reporter learned at the accident rescue command center that, as confirmed through on-site searches, there were 3 cars crushed under the bridge; one of them was a parked vehicle (with no one inside, and the driver had been found), while the other 2 cars contained 3 people who died. There are 5 vehicles on the overturned bridge deck, including 3 cars and 2 trucks. The accident resulted in 3 deaths and 2 injuries.

This wasn’t a bridge collapse; based on the photos from the scene, the bridge tipped over due to it rolling sideways, probably as a result of uneven forces on either side. Such problems often occur in single-column bridges and bypass bridges, and similar incidents have also taken place in Hangzhou in the past. In general design, such issues are taken into consideration, with a safety factor of over 1.5 applied; however, once the ultimate safe load capacity is exceeded, the vehicle will still roll over. This responsibility mainly lies with the load capacity of the vehicles; secondly, it depends on whether the bridge management authorities have implemented proper management measures and issued warnings regarding weight limits. Thirdly, it is up to the maintenance agencies to carry out regular inspections and repairs. After all, the bridge has been in use for over a decade, and overloaded vehicles have been using this road before – yet it is only this bridge that has problems.
