Messi officially received his sixth European Golden Shoe award in Barcelona today. Last season, Messi scored 36 goals in La Liga, winning his sixth European Golden Shoe award. He also became the first player since the introduction of the scoring system for the European Golden Shoe to achieve three consecutive victories in this award (16-17, 17-18, 18-19). In addition, Messi was also the top scorer in last season’s Champions League, scoring a total of 12 goals. Messi had previously won this award in five different seasons: the 2009-10 season (34 goals), the 2011-12 season (50 goals), the 2012-13 season (46 goals), the 2016-17 season (37 goals), and the 2017-18 season (34 goals). Furthermore, Messi is also the player with the most European Golden Shoe awards in history, having won it 6 times in total. Second is Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the European Golden Shoe in four seasons: 2007-08, 2010-11, 2013-14, and 2014-15. The European Golden Shoe was established in the 1967–68 season, aiming to honor the player who scored the most goals in Europe’s top football leagues each season. This award was originally managed by the French newspaper L’Équipe, but starting from the 1996–97 season, it came to be awarded by the Union of European Sports Magazines.
