The cranking speed is very low, and the number of revolutions is also small; therefore, it should be fine to crank the centrifugal pump in either direction. In some positive displacement pumps, such as Roots blowers, rotating the impellers in the reverse direction can cause backflow.
The requirement to turn a centrifugal pump manually should be done in the direction of operation; personally, I don’t think it has much impact. It is probably done to better check whether there is any sticking in the pump body and to prevent the impeller from becoming loose.
