There has always been the saying that the more white hairs you pluck, the more they appear, and many people refrain from plucking even a few white hairs. In fact, whether the hair that grows out will be black or white depends on the secretion of melanin in the body, and it has nothing to do with whether the hair is pulled out or not. As one gets older, more gray hairs will appear, even if they are not pulled out; this is a natural physiological process. However, even after pulling out the white hairs, the melanin in the corresponding hair follicles may still be produced in insufficient amounts, so the new hairs that grow will remain white. Although pulling out hair does not affect the number of gray hairs, it is not recommended to do so frequently, as it may damage the hair roots. Does cutting your hair make it grow faster? Illusion! Hair grows from the roots, so cutting the ends of the hair does not help it grow longer. However, regularly trimming the ends of your hair can reduce splitting and make it healthier. The reason it seems that trimming the ends helps hair grow faster is that, after trimming, breakage and shedding caused by split ends decrease, which gives the impression that the hair is growing faster. Does sleeping with wet hair cause headaches? That’s right! Many people are used to taking a bath before bed and going to sleep with wet hair while the air conditioner is on. When waking up the next day, one often feels headaches and fatigue. This is because, throughout the day, a person’s yang energy is weakest at midnight, making them prone to fatigue and having a weaker ability to resist illnesses. Washing your hair before bed causes moisture to remain on the scalp, and over time this can lead to stagnation of qi and blood as well as blockages in the meridians. Moreover, sleeping in an air-conditioned bedroom right after washing your hair with your head exposed to the cold air can lead to a combination of cold and dampness, thereby causing illnesses. Many people experience numbness in their scalp in the middle of the night, accompanied by pain. Over time, this can also lead to a condition known as subcutaneous plexitis. Does hair loss mean kidney deficiency? There are other reasons! The vitality of hair stems from kidney energy; the kidneys are responsible for hair growth. When there is sufficient kidney essence, the hair is thick and shiny, whereas otherwise, hair loss is more likely to occur. However, hair loss is not entirely due to kidney deficiency. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that hair is a byproduct of blood; the liver stores blood, and either stagnation of liver qi or the transformation of liver stagnation into heat can deplete yin blood, resulting in insufficient nutrition for the hair and thus hair loss. Some new mothers find that, within a few months after giving birth, they experience unexplained hair loss; this is actually due to a deficiency of qi and blood after childbirth. Additionally, a weak spleen with poor digestive function can lead to poor circulation of blood, which in turn affects hair growth. From a Western medical perspective, psychological factors, fungal infections, genetics, endocrine issues, and so on can all cause hair loss; even shampoos and conditioners can lead to hair loss. The treatment for each type of hair loss is different. Does washing your hair every day cause more hair loss? Illusion! Showering your hair does not cause hair loss; hair loss is mainly due to factors such as hormones, endocrine issues, and psychological factors. If you notice a lot of hair falling out while washing your hair, it may be because a large portion of your hair is already in the regenerative or resting phase; such hair is inherently in a state of being shed, and it’s only a matter of time before it falls out. Normal, healthy hair does not shed much just from washing it. But if we don’t wash our hair for a long time, the oils secreted by the sebaceous glands along with other debris can clog the hair follicles, interfering with their normal function of producing hair and leading to hair loss. Does washing your hair every day increase dandruff? No! Dandruff is a normal byproduct of the keratinization process in the scalp; it continuously falls off as part of the skin’s natural metabolic processes. Generally, when there are abnormalities in the functions of the body or skin, dandruff may increase significantly. For example, fungal infections, irritation of the scalp by chemicals, or a deficiency in vitamin A can all lead to more dandruff. However, the amount of dandruff isn’t necessarily related to how often one washes their hair. It should be noted that washing your hair frequently can damage the hair cuticles, leading to damaged hair quality. Should shampoo not come into direct contact with the scalp? Fake! Some people believe that direct contact of shampoo with the scalp can cause hair loss. But it should be noted that shampoo is not a hair loss treatment; if shampoo had the ability to prevent hair loss, who would use it then? Actually, there are just two points: 1. As long as you are not allergic to the ingredients in shampoo, it’s fine no matter how it comes into contact with your scalp. Allergic reactions generally have little to do with the concentration or dose of the allergen. 2. As long as it is a qualified shampoo from a reputable brand, its original concentration is low enough to minimize irritation to the skin, so there should be no problems even if you apply the shampoo directly to your head. Can shaving your head make your hair grow thicker? No! The child’s hair is thin and yellow; the elders in the family say that shaving the child’s hair more often will solve the problem. However, this approach has no scientific basis. Long hair, like height, grows at different speeds. Most babies’ hair gradually becomes thicker and darker over time, changing from yellow to black. It generally stabilizes around 1.5 years of age, with some areas gradually becoming thicker only after the age of 2. On the contrary, children are generally active; using a razor to shave their hair carelessly can actually damage the scalp, making it worse than necessary. Can eating black sesame seeds help protect hair? Sure! From a nutritional perspective, there is also a basis for using black sesame seeds to care for hair. Black sesame seeds are high in protein and linoleic acid, which can provide nutrients for the hair. Moreover, black sesame seeds are rich in minerals and vitamins, all of which are beneficial for hair health. But if there are serious problems with the hair, such as necrotic hair follicles, black sesame is of no help.
