The series tells the story of what caused the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine in 1986, and how the brave people at that time sacrificed themselves to save Europe from this catastrophe. In the early hours of April 26, 1986, a severe explosion occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Pripyat, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Valery Legasov (played by Jared Harris), as a distinguished Soviet nuclear physicist, became part of the emergency team tasked with dealing with the accident, and was also one of the first to understand what had happened and to take action to address it. Boris Sherbina (played by Stellan Skarsgård), Deputy Head of the Soviet Council of Ministers and head of the Soviet Energy Agency, was assigned to head the accident investigation committee a few hours after the incident occurred, but at that time he was not yet aware that the reactor had exploded. As the senior responder to this unprecedented man-made disaster, he found himself trapped by issues within the political system, as well as having to deal with the rising number of casualties resulting from this nuclear disaster. Urania Khomyuk, a Soviet nuclear physicist played by Emily Watson, is committed to investigating the truth behind the Chernobyl accident in order to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future. But during the investigation, she encountered unexpected conflicts with those who wanted to bury those terrible secrets; to uncover the truth, she had to risk losing her freedom, or even her life
I also came across this series by chance on Tencent Video; I thought it was a documentary, but to my surprise it turned out to be a TV series. The drama accurately recreates everything that happened before and after the Chernobyl disaster. Although there are only 5 episodes, the content is rich and worth watching. It is also a fine work for popularizing knowledge about nuclear reactions.
