Electromagnetic flowmeters can measure a wide range of media, including sewage, acids, and alkalis, with high precision. So, can they be used to measure liquid-solid mixed media? In fact, we should view issues from a two-faceted perspective. Firstly, it is a liquid-solid mixed medium, and under normal circumstances this makes it suitable for measurement; however, the decision must be based on the specific conditions at the site. 1. What is a liquid-solid mixed medium? The flow structure of liquid-solid mixed fluids is highly complex; it is influenced not only by the densities of the liquid and solid phases, the solid content, changes in flow velocity, as well as the shape and layout of the pipes, but also by the size of the solid particles. The solid particles in liquid-solid mixed fluids come in a variety of shapes and have significant differences in hardness; as a result, they cause erosion on the parts of the electromagnetic flowmeter that are in contact with the fluid. The erosion rate depends not only on the shape and hardness of the solid particles but also on the flow velocity – the higher the flow velocity, the faster the erosion rate. Installing the flowmeter sensor on a vertical pipe can prevent the pipe wall from shortening its service life due to uneven wear. However, a thinner wall thickness reduces the stiffness of the measuring tube, leading to increased errors. Common liquid-solid mixed media include sewage, slurry, coal slurry, mud, pulp, water-coal slurry, etc. II. Liquid-solid mixed media possess unique advantages. Electromagnetic flowmeters are more advantageous for measuring liquids with high conductivity, such as slurry, coal slurry, mud, and pulp. Preferably, electromagnetic flowmeters offer high measurement accuracy, which can be several times higher than that of differential pressure flowmeters ; Secondly, there is no need to worry about clogging at all, as flow sensors with the same diameter as the process pipes are used, which does not increase resistance ; As for the issue of corrosion resistance, it is also emphasized that installing the measuring tube on a vertical pipe ensures consistent corrosion, as well as preventing heavy phase deposition at low flow rates. III. Is a liquid-solid mixed medium suitable for electromagnetic flowmeters? Corrosion in electromagnetic flowmeters is difficult to avoid; in the most severe cases, the measurement tube gets worn through. Therefore, close monitoring is necessary when such situations occur. Based on field operation experience, the inner lining wears out most severely near the flange of the measurement tube; therefore, a protective ring with higher wear resistance can be added to the measurement tube. To monitor the wear of the lining inside the measurement tube, a replaceable wear-resistant sleeve-type electromagnetic flowmeter transmitter can be used. In the measurement tube, an approach using an inner liner wear-through alarm is employed, with an additional alarm electrode being installed; when the inner liner is worn through, conductivity is established between the two electrodes, thereby triggering an alarm.
