“If things don’t go as planned, look to yourself for the reason. ” This sentence is from Mencius·Lilou I, and its meaning is: when things do not succeed, when one encounters setbacks and difficulties, or when relationships with others are poor, one should reflect on oneself and look for the reasons within oneself. Yet our usual practices often run counter to what the sages advocated. When there are problems, don’t blame others; instead, reflect on yourself.
