Recently, several customers encountered issues with no signal when installing external ultrasonic flowmeters. After some simple guidance from our after-sales engineers, the problems were resolved successfully. Here, we summarize the causes and solutions in hopes of providing some help to everyone. The main steps for installing an external clamp-type ultrasonic flow meter are: selecting the installation location, entering parameters, determining the sensor installation distance, applying coupling agent, and securing the sensor. Q value of ultrasonic flowmeters Most users can understand how to carry out the above steps after reading the instructions, but even when following those steps, the flow rate is not displayed. The main reasons for this are as follows: 1. The installation distance automatically calculated by the clamp-type ultrasonic flowmeter is interpreted in a too mechanical manner, with an attempt to install it with precision to the millimeter level. In fact, this distance is merely a reference value; factors such as the conditions of the pipe, including variations in wall thickness and unevenness of the inner surface, can cause deviations in the sound wave signals. Therefore, a very practical approach when carrying out actual installation is to first fix the upstream sensor, and then use the M90 button on the main unit to check the signal strength and quality. Generally, both UP and DN should be above 80; if the Q value is below 50, the flow meter cannot perform accurate measurements. 2. In terms of user installation issues, it is common for users to find that both UP and DN values are 0 when checking the M90 menu. The main reasons for this are either the lack of coupling agent or loose clamps; another reason is the absence of water in the pipeline during installation. 3. The reason for a Q value of 0 is usually an inappropriate distance; in such cases, it is best to open the M90 menu and slowly move the downstream sensor until the Q value reaches its maximum value, after which it can be fixed in place. Many users, once they find that no data flow can be detected after installation, rush to call and claim that the external ultrasonic flow meter is broken or ineffective.
