The entire process does not require expertise in thermal engineering. As for saying one doesn’t understand steam turbines, is that necessary? The manufacturer is responsible for production, while the design institute provides the corresponding technical requirements. Only the pipes on the steam turbine are required; as long as the final analysis results meet standards such as NEMA SM23, that is sufficient. This is also why small and medium-sized petrochemical design institutes have little demand for specialized fields such as thermal water supply and drainage. Piping can handle all pipeline design tasks in petrochemical projects.

There are plenty of people in mechanical and materials engineering fields who work on piping tasks. Besides, if one’s only responsible for piping, is it really necessary to understand turbines?
The reasons why the Petrochemical Design Institute has established this specialty are mainly these. The first reason is that the compound aims for comprehensive professionalism; it prefers not to have certain capabilities rather than having fewer of them. Reason two: if it is a design institute affiliated with a large-scale chemical plant, since such plants already have boilers and steam systems, work can start right away once there are any related modifications to be made. Third, the main business is related to this area, so thermal engineering is required. However, in most petrochemical design institutes, the thermal engineering discipline plays the role of a minor discipline or an auxiliary one; in some cases, such a role is even not necessary. The Petrochemical Design Institute has process engineering as its core specialty, with all other specialties serving that purpose
