On February 1, 1986, the Long March 3 rocket was successfully launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, placing the Dongfanghong-2 practical communication and broadcasting satellite into its intended orbit. The launch of the practical satellite marked China’s full mastery of launch vehicle technology, ushering in an era of independent development and deployment of communication satellites. The Dongfanghong-3 satellite was China’s first generation of geosynchronous satellites to utilize three-axis stabilization technology; it was primarily used for television transmission, telephone services, telegraphy, faxing, broadcasting, and data transmission. The Dongfanghong-3 satellite was launched on May 12, 1997, by a Long March 3A launch vehicle developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology.
