Some people in China are working on this, but it involves the long-distance transportation of sludge rather than water-coal slurry. When I was in school, I heard that there was a manufacturer in Beijing that produced high-pressure transfer pumps, which were developed from technologies used for transporting concrete; I can’t remember the details exactly. You can search online about it – it is said that they have also worked on water-coal slurry systems
To add additives, it seems that Shandong Yankuang or some other coal mines export water-coal slurry to Japan as well
That company in the United States transports coal water slurry over long distances for use in thermal power plants, not for gasification. It is said that the former has finer coal particles, resulting in better stability of the water-coal slurry; however, the particle size distribution of the water-coal slurry used for gasification is wider, making it prone to stratification and sedimentation. Furthermore, if the flow rate is too high, the water-coal slurry causes severe erosion of the pipes; if the flow rate is too low, the slurry tends to settle, and more relay pumping stations are required. Does anyone know of any company, university, or research institution in China that has conducted research in this area?
Pressure pumping stations should be installed along the route; pay attention to the viscosity of the water-coal slurry, as the amount of dispersant added is crucial!
If there are successful examples, the cost of transporting coal slurry can be significantly reduced compared to transporting coal itself; addressing the transportation issue may therefore be even more important; But the industrial wastewater still needs to be transported there; otherwise, discharge treatment would have to be considered. In any case, it’s still a good thing.
