Magnetic flap level gauges are widely used in industries such as power, petroleum, chemicals, metallurgy, environmental protection, shipbuilding, construction, and food for the measurement and control of liquid levels during production processes. The product is developed based on the principles of buoyancy and magnetic coupling. As the liquid level in the container being measured changes, the magnetic float inside the gauge’s tube rises or falls accordingly. The permanent magnet located within the float transmits magnetic force to the magnetic flip switches, causing the red and white flip switches to rotate 180°. When the liquid level rises, the flip switches change from white to red; when the liquid level drops, they change from red to white. The boundary between red and white on the indicator represents the actual height of the liquid level inside the container, thereby providing a clear indication of the liquid level. The application areas of magnetic flap level gauges are as follows: First, they are suitable for use in dyeing and finishing equipment, wastewater treatment systems, power plants, chemical processing equipment, hot kerosene boilers, and the petrochemical industry. Secondly, it is suitable for high temperatures, high pressures, strong acids, strong bases, and explosion-proof requirements; it has a simple structure and is reliable and durable. Various optional accessories can be added to facilitate easier control. Third, in the event of a power outage, the on-site magnetic switch is not affected, ensuring high accuracy. Fourth, install a level transmitter and magnetic switch, which can be installed or adjusted at any time without shutting down the machine. Fifth, add a color patch of a different color every 10 centimeters to make the liquid level easier to identify. The magnetic flap level gauge operates on the principle of Archimedes’ buoyancy and is a type of float-type metal tube field indicator for measuring liquid levels. The advantages of magnetic flap level gauges include high sealing performance, leak prevention, resistance to high temperatures and pressures, resistance to severe corrosion, and compatibility with high-viscosity fluids. They can be configured appropriately for different measurement conditions, enabling safe and reliable level measurement. There are no blind spots throughout the measurement process, the display is clear, readings are straightforward, and the measurement range is wide. Equipped with a level alarm and control switch, it enables upper and lower limit alarms and control for the liquid level or threshold level. With various transmitters, it can convert the signals related to the liquid level or threshold level into standard 4-20mA signals for output, and it also supports communication protocols such as HART and FOXCOM to enable remote monitoring, indication, recording, and control via field buses. Therefore, magnetic flap level gauges exhibit strong adaptability and flexibility in use, and can be widely applied in various fields of industrial production, especially in the petrochemical industry. Media with low density and high volatility include commercial liquefied gas, methane, and ethane, among others. If a conventional magnetic flip-top level gauge is used, when the temperature is high, the medium vaporizes and generates numerous bubbles; these bubbles cause the magnetic float to move up and down. The external magnetic flaps cannot keep up with this movement, which results in some of the flaps flipping while others do not. When flaps that flip and those that do not mix together, it becomes impossible to determine the exact level of the liquid. Additionally, if the magnetic float moves up and down too rapidly, it may collide with or rub against the measurement chamber, leading to damage to the float or a reduction in its service life. The most direct way to solve this problem is to control the degree of vaporization of the medium and ensure that high temperatures from the outside do not penetrate into it; therefore, some people have adopted the principle of thermos flasks, that is, by adding a vacuum jacket outside the measurement chamber of the magnetic flap level gauge. Doing this has some effect, but it is not entirely ideal. There is currently a magnetic flap level gauge designed specifically for liquefied gas. Its principle relies on a dual-tube structure, which divides the interior of the gauge’s main tube into a vaporization chamber and a measurement chamber. When the medium inside the gauge is affected by temperature and vaporizes, forming bubbles, these bubbles rise upward through the vaporization chamber without entering the measurement chamber and thus affecting the operation of the magnetic float. Since the bubbles formed by the vaporization of the medium can escape if they are able to do so as they rise, they do not press against the magnetic float. This design provides space for such bubbles to escape, enabling the magnetic flap level gauge to function properly even when a large amount of the medium vaporizes. There are many types of magnetic flap level gauges, including standard types, those for medium temperature and pressure, high temperature and high pressure, low temperature applications, corrosion-resistant models, those designed for liquids with extremely low density, food-grade models, as well as various specialized types. The classification is quite detailed; some manufacturers even offer over 30 different models, with each model being suitable for different measurement conditions. This indicates that users should conduct careful analysis and research when choosing magnetic flap level gauges. Although the structural principle of these gauges is simple, problems can arise if they are not suitable for the specific operating conditions. The actual operating conditions must be taken into account when selecting any instrument, and this applies equally to magnetic flap level gauges. Examples include measuring the level of low-density, easily vaporizable substances such as liquefied gas, methane, and ethane, as well as the level of liquid sulfur. This article analyzes the application of magnetic flap level gauges in such special occasions, in order to better meet the requirements of the production process.
