How much olefin is needed to increase the bromine value by one
The bromine number reflects the content of unsaturated hydrocarbons in the oil; generally, the unsaturated hydrocarbons in gasoline are mainly alkenes. Dividing the bromine number by the molecular weight of bromine gives the molar amount of alkenes per 100 grams of oil. However, the distribution of olefins varies among different types of gasoline, as does their molecular weight; therefore, there is no clear linear relationship between the bromine value and the olefin content determined by chromatographic analysis.
The amount of olefins in oils is an important indicator for assessing oil quality and controlling the production process. Currently, both domestically and internationally, the bromine value and bromine index are still used to indicate the degree of unsaturation in oils. In other words, the higher the bromine index of an oil, the more unsaturated hydrocarbons (mainly olefins) it contains, the poorer its stability, and the more likely it is to experience quality changes. The bromine value is related to the number of unsaturated bonds, and there is no definite correlation with the number of olefin molecules. Since an alkene molecule may contain one or more unsaturated bonds, the bromine value simply reflects the degree of unsaturation of the alkene.
