I saw a colleague say that 51talk was great, so I decided to give it a try. Starting out out of curiosity, I continued using it for a year. I’d like to share my thoughts; I noticed that many people have doubts about it, so I’ll talk about the problems I encountered while using 51talk for learning*. First, let’s talk about the results of studying at 51talk for one year: 51talk has a total of 10 levels, with each level consisting of 144 class hours. Level L0 is for learning letters; it’s not necessary to choose this level. If your child doesn’t have a solid foundation, they can study on their own at home for some time to build a basic understanding before starting classes here. It will be better; one can go straight to level L1, with 18 topics per level and 864 words. The course materials are a bit dull; it mainly depends on the teacher you choose. One of the teachers we chose, Fei, has a decent pronunciation. During classes, the foreign teachers are very proactive in encouraging the children to speak, but the content they talk about is limited to what’s in the PPTs – it’s essentially just reading and repeating the material from the slides, which makes the children find it boring. I think this is okay; the quality of teachers here varies. I tried many options before finally finding a teacher. At first, it seemed interesting, and the children were willing to attend the classes. But as time passed and the novelty wore off, many problems arose; sometimes it was the network issue, and other times there was a synchronization problem between the image and the audio. I think people shouldn’t have too high expectations for it. As a result of persevering for a year, my accent has improved a bit; I’m not as shy as before. Still, I don’t recommend this course to others, because 15 classes are required each month, and if you fail to complete them, credits will be deducted – which I think is a shame. Additionally, it’s difficult to arrange meetings with teachers; there are no fixed foreign teachers, and you have to arrange meetings with them on your own, which is quite troublesome. It’s not that I necessarily need a fixed foreign teacher; 2-3 teachers would be fine. For the course we’re currently looking at, I plan to use 2-3 foreign teachers, whose pronunciation is excellent, and who also provide great interaction and guidance. The lesson materials are also very well-designed; the teacher’s questions are closely tied to these materials. Over the 25-minute class, progress moves from words to sentence patterns and then to speaking whole sentences, with a high degree of coherence. The teaching materials here are the original American versions, and I feel they are more reliable than those used by 51talk. There’s no requirement to complete 15 lessons per month; usually we have 4-5 lessons per week. Of course, if something comes up or if the teacher is unavailable, then we don’t have lessons. If there are better options, why choose 51talk? Then, here is the 51talk price list for 2020: We purchased a package of 4 lessons for 18,396 yuan; each lesson costs around 40–50 yuan. Recently, they are offering short-term courses, with 30 additional lessons included for 60+ yuan, costing 5,799 yuan. Finally. I really don’t recommend signing up for 51talk. Firstly, it’s very easy for accounts to be suspended or for class hours to be deducted. Although having frequent classes does lead to better results, it’s still necessary to consider the actual circumstances. Such forced deductions of class hours seem like an attempt to focus only on increasing the rate of classes being held. Inflexible schedules can easily affect one's life. If you have money and are idle, pretend I didn’t say anything.
