Jiuban English isn’t very well-known. I came across it by chance on a forum, where someone had written a long article recommending it. It seems to be an online one-on-two tutoring service. The main textbooks offered by Jiuban English are divided into 4 stages; in the first stage, emphasis is placed on listening and speaking, and textbooks developed independently are used ； In the second stage, which focuses on phonics and reading, the original reading materials used are those intended for third-grade students in California schools ； Third stage: Improving grammar skills, using the Oxford EveryBody-Up textbook ； The fourth stage: the reading phase, which uses the California Language Arts Wonders textbook. Jiuban English offers only two main classes per week, at fixed times; it’s not possible to schedule these classes on one’s own. Although the teachers are fixed, students cannot choose them themselves – the class teacher decides who will teach. When two children attend a class, the time allocated for learning and practice is reduced by half. The fees are not cheap either – each class at Jiuban English costs over 100. Although the course materials include animated elements, the visual appearance of the classroom interface is poor and not attractive enough ； Moreover, Jiuban English does not offer very flexible class times; one can only choose between Monday and Thursday, or Tuesday and Friday as well as Wednesday and Sunday – choosing one of these times to attend classes*. To be honest, I don’t think the child makes much progress, as the frequency is too low – often they end up forgetting what they’ve learned ； I believe that if one really wants to learn English as if it were their native language, a stable learning environment is necessary. Even if it’s not possible to study every day, at least 2 hours per week should be dedicated to interacting with a foreign teacher in order to see results. The cost for half a year of lessons for my child was less than 4,000 yuan, which is quite affordable. All lessons are conducted one-on-one; the foreign teacher focuses on just one child during each 25-minute session, which allows them to pay close attention to the child’s learning progress and adapt their teaching methods accordingly. Additionally, many parents are not familiar with the pricing details for Jiu Ban English. Let me share them with you: The courses offered by Jiu Ban English are sold in package forms, and there are two types available. One is the Intensive Package, which usually has a validity period of 12 months, and the other is the Top Student Package, whose validity period is typically 24 months. The price details are as follows: Intensive Package – 96 core lessons + 48 public lessons, priced at 10,900 yuan； Intensive Package – Small Class Package: 96 core courses + 12 reading classes + 48 open classes, 11,600 yuan ； Top student package: 192 core courses + 96 open classes, 19,200 yuan ； Top Student Package: 192 core courses + 24 reading sessions + 96 public lectures, 20,400 yuan ；
Jiuban English relies mainly on game-based teaching, and the classroom atmosphere is indeed very relaxed. However, the number of class sessions per week is too low, which is not conducive to children’s systematic improvement. The formal lessons consist mainly of animated videos and classroom games; after class, review is required using materials via WeChat. Moreover, finding a suitable study partner is not an easy task. After considering all these factors, I have decided to give it up；
After reading people’s experiences with the one-year course offered by Jiuban English, I think everyone must have an idea of whether it’s appropriate to enroll their children in such a program. In my opinion, when choosing a training class, it’s important to consider the child’s needs first and determine what kind of courses would be suitable for them. Moreover, my child already has trouble concentrating for long periods and tends to get distracted easily; with a playmate around, I’m worried he’ll just focus on playing.
I think the effectiveness of Jiu Ban English varies from person to person.
