These three metals are likely to exist together in the same ore, and some processing methods involve wet processes – that is, extraction first, followed by back-extraction and electrowinning – to obtain metals of very high purity.
Methods of copper smelting: mainly hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical methods

Let’s talk about the raw materials first; these three metals are associated metals, and depending on their main content, they can be classified as nickel concentrate, cobalt concentrate, and copper-cobalt concentrate. (1) The production process model for nickel concentrate is represented by Jinchuan, featuring pyrometallurgical methods as the primary approach, supplemented by hydrometallurgical methods, while also enabling the recovery of precious metals ; There is also laterite nickel ore (nickel oxide ore); represented by MCC Ruimu, it has built a relatively large processing plant for laterite nickel ore in Papua New Guinea, using wet processing techniques. (2) Depending on their grade, cobalt concentrates require different production processes. Those with a high cobalt content can be processed through pyrometallurgical methods to produce white alloys (containing Co, Cu, Fe), while those with a lower cobalt content are usually treated using acid leaching techniques to extract copper; nickel is extracted from the P507 raffinate. Cobalt can be produced in the form of electrolytically refined cobalt or as cobalt salts, with companies such as Hanrui in Nanjing, Jiangsu, and Huayou Cobalt in Zhejiang being representative examples. (3) Copper-cobalt concentrate can be used to produce red alloys through thermal methods, or the corresponding metals can be extracted using wet-process techniques; a Indian company has a factory in Africa that carries out this production. Except for the wet process for nickel oxide ore, which is still in the exploratory stage, the other production processes are already quite mature. 1
