I majored in fine chemicals, but after graduation I worked in the electronics industry. Later, I wanted to return to my original field, so I changed jobs. I’ve only been working in the distillation sector for a short time now; of course, there’s still a gap compared to work related to fine chemicals, but it still falls under the category of chemical engineering. I would like to ask whether it is widely used in the distillation industry these days. Especially for applications that require high purity, what are some representative products? Distillation is a process for separating and purifying two or more substances. It takes advantage of the differences in the volatility of various components within a mixture; through the recirculation of liquid and gas phases, the gas and liquid phases come into contact with each other at multiple stages in opposite directions. Driven by thermal energy and governed by phase equilibrium principles, the more volatile components (light components) are continuously transferred from the liquid phase to the gas phase, while the less volatile components move from the gas phase to the liquid phase, thereby enabling the continuous separation of the mixture. This process is known as distillation. Solvent recovery is most common in large chemical plants.
