Was the qipao originally a robe made of flags? Is that why it’s called a qipao?

The qipao is the traditional clothing for Chinese and overseas Chinese women, and is regarded as a quintessential element of Chinese culture as well as the national dress for women. Although there is still much controversy regarding its definition and origin, it remains one of the most splendid phenomena and forms in China’s long-standing clothing culture. However, those with strong traditional views felt that it was too revealing and not dignified enough. In the early years of the Republic, when generals served as diplomatic envoys, requiring their wives to wear qipaos, this idea met resistance from many female officials. Later, Sister Deng took the lead, and there was nothing left to say – after all, it was a beautiful form of attire.
