The American Geographical Society announced that the waters surrounding Antarctica will be called the Southern Ocean, officially recognizing it as the fifth ocean on Earth. The American Geographical Society states that since it began creating maps in 1915, it has confirmed the existence of four oceans in the world: the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean. Starting from World Oceans Day on June 8, the Southern Ocean will be recognized as the fifth largest ocean in the world. The Southern Ocean is an important habitat for marine ecosystems and a focal point of the Southern Hemisphere. It surrounds Antarctica directly, extending from the continent’s coastline all the way to 60 degrees south latitude. The boundaries of the ocean are connected to three of the other four major oceans on Earth: the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. But what sets the Southern Ocean apart from other oceans is that it is largely not determined by the surrounding landmasses; rather, it is a unique body of water due to an ocean current within it.
