The history of leak-free magnetic pumps dates back to 1943, when the UK granted a patent for this invention to the Howard brothers, Charles and Jeffrey Howard. The early industrial development of magnetic pump was initiated by the Howard brothers through their company, Howard Mechanical Development Co. (later abbreviated as HMD). At the end of the 1940s, in 1946, the world’s first magnetic pump was manufactured; almost simultaneously, between 1947 and 1948, Franz Klaus in West Germany also successfully developed a magnetic pump. Both of the aforementioned companies have a 50-year history in manufacturing magnetic pumps. There are also two companies in the world that were the first to use magnetic pumps: one is the British company Bunnenman Chemicals ; The second is Germany’s Bayer company. 1: The successful development of high-performance magnetic materials. In 1978, rare-earth cobalt was successfully developed, giving rise to the second generation of samarium-cobalt permanent magnets. First, samarium-cobalt 1:5 magnets were created, and later samarium-cobalt 2:17 magnets were developed. The magnetic energy product of these magnets can reach 26–28 megagauss-oevers, while their intrinsic coercivity is above 7000 gauss; they can also be used at temperatures up to 350°C. In 1983, the rare earth element neodymium was successfully developed, giving rise to the third generation of neodymium-iron-boron permanent magnets with improved performance. The magnetic energy product of these magnets can now reach 45 megagauss-oevers, their intrinsic coercivity can exceed 20,000 gauss, and they can be used at temperatures up to 150°C. In the late 1990s, a number of manufacturers of high-power metal magnetic drive pumps emerged like mushrooms after rain. According to information provided by a pump factory’s research department, magnetic pumps account for 30% of the total number of pumps in use abroad, while that figure is less than 2% in China. Magnetic pump shows a tendency to replace conventional pumps and other leak-free pumps within a certain range.
