Notice of the National Symposium on the Treatment and Comprehensive Resource Utilization of Arsenic-Containing Hazardous Waste from Non-ferrous Metal Smelting The National Symposium on the Treatment and Comprehensive Resource Utilization of Arsenic-Containing Hazardous Waste from Non-ferrous Metal Smelting, organized by the Academic Committee for Non-ferrous Metal Metallurgy of the Chinese Society of Non-ferrous Metals, is scheduled to be held in Yantai City, Shandong Province, from November 28 to December 1, 2008. I. Meeting Agenda 1. Special presentations 1) Leaders from the China Non-ferrous Metals Industry Association provided an overview of the current situation regarding environmental protection in the smelting of heavy non-ferrous metals in China, the measures taken in this regard, as well as the relevant industrial policies. 2) Zong Zijiu from China ENFI Engineering Technology Co., Ltd. introduced the relevant **laws, regulations, and policies regarding the control of pollutant emissions in the smelting of non-ferrous metals. 3) Expert Zhou Lianbi from the Beijing Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy discussed environmental protection and comprehensive utilization in the non-ferrous metals industry. 4) Expert Chen Zhiruo from China ENFI Engineering Technology Co., Ltd. explained the distribution of arsenic during the smelting process and the methods for extracting arsenic trioxide. 5) Professor Tang Motang from Central South University discussed the problems caused by arsenic in non-ferrous metallurgy and corresponding countermeasures. 6) Chief Engineer Shen Dianbang of Dongying Fangyuan Non-ferrous Metals Co., Ltd. introduced the recovery of arsenic from smelting flue gas and the treatment of arsenic-containing wastewater. 7) Mr. Chen Yingwu from Yanggu Xiangguang Copper Industry Co., Ltd. introduced the industrial application of Xiangguang Copper Industry’s clean, efficient, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly integrated copper smelting process. 8) Shuikoushan Non-ferrous Metals Company introduces the smelting process for metallic arsenic. 9) Zhuzhou Smelting Group Company introduces its pollution control measures, environmental protection efforts, and goals. 10) Guixi Smelting Plant introduces its pollution control measures, environmental protection initiatives, and objectives. 11) Jinlong Copper Industry Co., Ltd. introduces its pollution control measures, environmental protection initiatives, and objectives. 12) Daye Non-ferrous Metals Company introduces its pollution control measures, environmental protection efforts, and objectives. 13) Tohoku University introduces research on resource-based comprehensive utilization technologies. 1 4) Kunming University of Science and Technology presents research on technologies for comprehensive resource utilization. 2. Technical exchanges 1) Information exchange: Introduction to new technologies and equipment from foreign companies. Introduction to new technologies, new equipment, and new materials from relevant domestic enterprises. 2) On-site visits were made to enterprises such as Shandong Hengbang Smelting Co., Ltd. II. Participants: Relevant leaders from the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association and various academic societies, members of the Heavy Metallurgy Committee, leaders in charge of production, operations, and environmental protection at domestic nonferrous metal smelting enterprises, chief engineers and technical staff, leaders and relevant technical personnel from enterprises affected by arsenic hazards, representatives from the Equipment and Machinery Department, paper authors, and contacts from the Heavy Metallurgy Network. Representatives of relevant companies abroad, and representatives of manufacturers of production equipment related to non-ferrous metal smelting (see attachment as well). V. Meeting Fees: A fee of 1,200 yuan will be charged to each conference representative for meeting materials. (Accommodation will be arranged for the conference; costs are to be borne by the participants themselves.) VI. Requirements for the conference: 1) Papers recommended by each organization must be submitted to the conference organizing committee by November 10, 2008. 2) Members of the Heavy Metallurgy Committee are requested to arrive at the meeting on time. 3) Companies affected by arsenic hazards must arrange for their management and technical staff to attend the meeting. 4) Representatives attending the meeting must fax, email, or call the organizing committee to inform them in advance.
