I recently encountered a project involving the construction of cofferdams for methanol storage tanks, and I’m not sure how to approach designing such cofferdams for methanol What factors need to be considered for the foundation of a cofferdam? Are there any special requirements for the concrete of the cofferdam floor? What material is more economical to use for cofferdams?

Comprehensive consideration should be given to factors such as the fire separation distance required for the tanks, the type of material stored, and the tank capacity. Methanol seems to have little corrosive effect on concrete; therefore, no special requirements exist apart from impermeability. Bricks and stones are relatively cheap. However, considering environmental protection and leakage prevention, it is recommended to use reinforced concrete.

Reply: The answer on the 3rd floor is a bit extreme. The function of the cofferdam is: 1. Fire prevention; II. In the event of a leak, it will not occur everywhere. It is best to use concrete as the material for the cofferdam, and drainage ditches or pipes should be installed inside it.
It seems there are no strict requirements; it’s just necessary to prevent the fire from spreading in case of an accident. There should be no uncontrollable openings, and a valve can be installed outside the cofferdam. The height of the cofferdam and its distance from the storage tank must be sufficient to accommodate the maximum amount of leakage from the tank.
Hello, OP! The two most important requirements for cofferdams are: 1. Fire resistance ; 2. Based on the capacity to contain everything within the tank area in the event of a leak from the largest tank, this is primarily to prevent the spread of methanol leaks ;
There are no specific requirements for cofferdams; reference can be made to fire dikes. For anti-corrosion requirements, industrial anti-corrosion standards can be consulted
