Theoretical mechanics and material mechanics are of great significance for those working in the field of machinery! ! ! After starting work, I found that the mechanics knowledge I learned before was used very little. I asked a senior colleague who started working earlier than me, and he said that materials are very cheap these days, and stress analysis is needed in few cases; generally, a large margin is left during design. Is it really the case that I’m not yet at a level where I need this knowledge, or is it true as this senior brother said? Let’s discuss this based on our own work experiences!

Whether it’s needed or not, it must still be calculated in the design process. First, if a problem arises, having the calculation documents allows you to identify where the issue lies. Second, calculations help to save materials and reduce costs.
I disagree with what your senior brother said; if one is merely a simple draftsman or knows only how to use software, then there’s no need to consider physical strength or materials. But the more work is done on a project, the more irregularities one encounters, requiring stress analysis. Moreover, to understand standards well and apply both domestic and international standards flexibly, a theoretical foundation is essential. Therefore, if one truly wants to improve their level, they must not neglect theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

I agree with what was said on floor 4; to have judgment, one must have a solid foundation. Even with simulation software, it cannot replace design; the capabilities of such software are limited by the skills of the person who developed it, and it cannot be used to address every minor issue.
Only now, during the design process, do I realize that either some of the frames are designed to be too large, or they lack stability; it seems that mechanics of materials is essential for mechanical design.
The rather complex problems encountered in design can sometimes find very concise examples in mechanics textbooks; flipping through older textbooks can bring a sense of clarity.
Mechanical strength and material strength are a good foundation for future development, so they cannot be ignored.
