In recent years, with the development of China’s economy, the chemical industry has entered a golden age of growth. However, safety and environmental accidents in chemical enterprises have occurred frequently, causing serious consequences for the country’s economy and people’s livelihoods. I hope that colleagues will share their insights and knowledge, offering lessons learned from accidents in their own industries so that we can all improve together.
As a chemical enterprise, it is inevitable that safety accidents occur; the characteristics of the chemical industry—toxicity and harmfulness, flammability and explosiveness, as well as high temperatures and pressures—determine its high-risk nature. I do not wish to talk about accidents at our company here, as I am myself a safety professional; mentioning safety accidents brings to mind those heartbreaking scenes. I just want to mention some points to keep in mind in daily work: First of all, as employees of a chemical company, one must be extremely careful in their daily tasks (this is especially true for those working in safety-related roles; otherwise, negligence on your part could result in the loss of lives among fellow employees) ； Secondly, it is necessary to pay close attention to every detail; for example, a drop of water or oil on the ground should prompt one to consider which part might be leaking, so that the source of the leak can be identified promptly.
With the increasing emphasis on the environment and safety, being safe and environmentally friendly has become a necessity for the survival of various companies and enterprises. For safety and environmental protection, it is first necessary for everyone to realize that this is an issue that affects you, me, him, as well as the entire society – it’s not about taking it out on anyone in particular. Secondly, ensuring safety and environmental protection is a social responsibility that enterprises should fulfill. Then, for safety and environmental protection, efforts are required throughout the enterprise, in areas such as design, actual production, and emergency response. The specific approach depends on the actual situation of the enterprise.
The key to safety and environmental protection issues lies not in technical problems, but mainly in management issues. At present, in our country, there is insufficient severity in penalties and attention paid to the harm caused to people by issues such as safety and environmental protection, especially regarding chronic hazards; it seems that attention is only given when there are casualties.
Leaks and other inefficiencies in the fine chemical industry, especially in small-scale fine chemical plants, are difficult to address. Instability in production also occurs from time to time. Not to mention the issues related to the treatment, recycling, and disposal of wastewater, waste gas, and waste residues – it can be said that almost no plant meets the required standards. This was one of the main reasons why environmental protection agencies found that pollution control measures were not adequate in previous years. I believe that as someone working in the chemical industry, one should start with their own work and with the people around them, continuously improving their operational skills and knowledge of safety. In doing anything, it is necessary to abide by the factory’s regulations, operating procedures, maintenance guidelines, emission standards, and so on. I still remember the management practices at Syngenta’s Nantong branch – they truly implemented HSE principles effectively, and that’s something worth learning from. Of course, safety and environmental protection are not things that can be achieved in just a day or two; it takes time to make progress step by step!
Nowadays, environmental protection is strictly enforced; all regions place great importance on it. Many chemical companies have been shut down because they failed to meet environmental standards. In my opinion, the key to addressing environmental issues lies in optimizing the manufacturing processes – it’s best to solve problems through process improvements. If that’s not possible, then other equipment must be used to make necessary adjustments. At the same time, it’s important to strengthen on-site management!
In chemical plant production, safety comes first; potential hazards for accidents exist everywhere. Major accidents not only result in direct economic losses but can also cause casualties and severe environmental pollution. Therefore, it is very important to ensure orderly management of all processes at the production site; all tasks must be carried out properly so that production can proceed smoothly. It is necessary to continuously adopt new green chemistry technologies and strengthen efforts in safety and environmental protection for the benefit of future generations. Chemical industry professionals should enhance their knowledge, approach tasks in a practical manner, ensure standardized design, orderly production, and systematic management. They must always keep safety as a top priority, remain vigilant, and keep it firmly in mind.
I believe it is the differences in corporate culture that are to blame for the overall backwardness in safety management within our state-owned and private enterprises. It seems that there’s another wave of investment in the chemical industry in China right now; many of these investments involve upgrades and expansions, as well as efforts to increase domestic production, which is concerning! ! ! These chemical plants ignore the initial investment required for safe production, focusing instead on minimizing costs; the consequences of this approach are obvious! ! ! Especially the impact on the environment is terrifying! From north to south, from east to west, chemical plants everywhere! God! ! ! Abroad, management has long been focused on coastal areas; in China, local protectionism creates severe barriers. Sigh... Safety is an eternal topic, and it is particularly important in chemical production. As chemical operators, we must adhere to the operating procedures and carry out tasks according to the established standards. We also need to be thorough and careful during inspections, as life cannot be lived twice – safety comes first. Any abnormalities during production must be reported promptly, and effective measures should be taken to address them.
