I feel that chlor-alkali and synthetic ammonia are not well compared. The key to synthetic ammonia lies in high-pressure synthesis. Although chlor-alkali has low pressure and its electrolysis principle is relatively simple, it is more difficult to control its stable operation. Other processes in turn affect electrolysis. Except for the chlor-alkali treatment electrolyzer on the equipment, other equipment is simpler than ammonia synthesis. The instrument control is similar between the two.
The synthetic ammonia and urea project has a lot of high-temperature and high-pressure equipment, oxygen equipment, urea steel and other special materials equipment. It needs to use imported equipment and invest a lot of money.
I wonder if the chlor-alkali you mentioned includes vinyl chloride and polyvinyl chloride? Or something else? If you are only talking about the electrolysis part, the synthesis of ammonia and urea is more complicated. However, the polyvinyl chloride produced by the ethylene method includes direct chlorination, oxychlorination, cracking, etc. I think it is more complicated.
I think the production process of synthetic ammonia is simple, while the production process of chlor-alkali is more complex. Automatic control of ammonia synthesis is complicated, and chlor-alkali is general (if oxychlorination and vinyl chloride are not included). In terms of equipment, the chlor-alkali process has strong corrosion. Considering special materials, synthetic ammonia is generally used.
Synthetic ammonia is not simple either. Conversion, decarbonization, synthesis, and compression are all processes that are not critical to production, and the degree of automation is not as high as everyone imagines.
Of course, the synthetic ammonia production process is more difficult! The process production technology and the principles of both are very simple, but ammonia synthesis requires a complete set of high-temperature and high-pressure catalysts! Automated control systems and chlor-alkali are typical chemical unit processes where the intermediate products are very clear, making it easier to achieve automatic control! Most of the mechanical equipment and ammonia synthesis systems are pressure vessels (that is, special equipment), and of course they are more complex!
