I’m a female, 23 years old. I graduated from a junior college in 2020 with a degree in Urban Rail Transit Engineering Technology (sounds pretty pointless, right?) I applied to join the subway company at that time, but they don’t hire girls for engineering positions at all? ? After graduating, I took the adult college entrance exam to study environmental engineering. Through a referral from my family, I joined a small environmental protection company; I intended to stay there and continue developing my career, and it was also necessary for me to improve my educational qualifications. Right after graduating, since my major wasn’t related to this field and I was only familiar with CAD, I was mainly responsible for drawing individual equipment diagrams and piping diagrams. In my free time, I would help organize as-built drawings and other documents. I worked in this capacity for one and a half years; due to changes in the company’s staff and my own personal circumstances, I decided to resign and return to Wuhan to pursue my career there. I started working at a new company at the beginning of 2022; it is also in the environmental protection sector, but it is larger than my previous company, with much bigger projects as well. The position is a design engineer, and the daily tasks involve assisting process and specialty engineers by creating things such as layout drawings, ISO diagrams, and support brackets. Later on, PDMS modeling is also involved; it’s all work related to drawing, belonging to the more downstream aspects of this role. Since I’m not majoring in environmental engineering, my career prospects are limited. I don’t understand the relevant processes nor have I worked on any projects, so I can only do relatively low-level tasks. The salary is low and there’s no hope for promotion, which makes me feel very lost. I currently work in the chemical industry, dealing with piping tasks, but I’m worried that due to my lack of knowledge of the relevant processes, it will be as difficult for me to advance as it was in the water treatment industry.
