In piping systems, long-radius elbows and short-radius elbows are commonly encountered; let’s discuss how to choose between them
Try to use elbows with a large radius; when space is limited, use elbows with a small radius. The stress on elbows with a small radius should be considered as 0.8 times that of elbows with a large radius.
It depends on what it’s used for. Those with long necks are good, but they’re expensive; so consider your usage environment.
During my work, I saw that many design institutes use short-radius elbows, and even in areas where long-radius elbows would be appropriate, short-radius elbows are still used. There is not much difference in price between long-radius and short-radius elbows.
Long-radius elbows should be given priority; on the one hand, they result in less flow resistance, and on the other hand, their flexibility is greater compared to elbows with shorter radii
When installing pipes, it is advisable to use elbows with a radius that is 1.5 times larger; for some special pipes, elbows with radii that are 2 times, 3 times, or even larger are required :)
A longer radius is better, as it results in less flow resistance; it is also less prone to clogging, especially with solid or mixed media, and it offers greater expansion compensation capacity.
