Shell Signs Three Gasification Technology Licensing Contracts in China November 21, 2008 Source: Shanghai Securities News Author: Chen Qijue Shell Research Limited (Shell) announced yesterday that three gasification technology licensing contracts recently reached with a Chinese company have now taken effect. To date, Shell has signed 19 gasification technology licensing agreements in China. Under these three new contracts, Yunnan Yuntianhua Co., Ltd. is purchasing the Shell gasification technology license for the second time; it is also the third company in China to use this Shell gasification technology. The new contract between the two parties was registered and came into effect on November 10 this year by the **relevant authorities. Under the new contract, Yuntianhua will apply Shell’s gasification technology to its Shuifu project, a methanol production plant that uses coal as raw material and has an annual production capacity of 260,000 tons. Shell China also announced on the same day the establishment of a dedicated clean coal service center in Beijing, staffed by nearly 30 engineers to provide professional services to coal gasification clients in China. It seems that Chinese customers are increasingly recognizing SHELL’s gasification technology. It is foreseeable that, after initial adaptation in China, SHELL’s gasification technology has begun to suit China’s environmental conditions as well as its various coal types!
It’s really an enormous investment in developing foreign gasification technology! Why not invest money in domestic gasification technology? Shell needs to carry out upgrades in this coal chemical industry hub in China, and must develop practical technologies suitable for the local conditions there
The longer it runs, the more it is gradually absorbed.
China is the testing ground for all kinds of gasification furnaces! There is an urgent need for breakthroughs and advancements in domestic gasification technologies; it’s good news that companies like Huali are able to sell their gasifiers to foreigners. SHELL’s trials in China, thanks to the efforts of Chinese engineering and technical personnel, have finally led to its maturity. The trials of GSP in China will also follow this path. Only China’s own gasification technology is struggling to break free from this encirclement.
I work with Shell furnaces, but they really aren’t that ideal. Although our company is among the best in the country at the moment, it’s still worth considering introducing them here. To date, no Shell furnace in our country has been able to operate for a long period of time; it is believed that by the time the problems associated with Shell furnaces are resolved, their maintenance periods will have arrived as well. In such limited spaces, it is practically impossible to carry out extensive replacements.
Now, many gasification projects around the world come to China for testing, but SHELL seems to be doing rather well. Whether the technology is excellent or not, the ability to sell it is what counts. However, when making a choice, companies should still consider their own circumstances; otherwise, they will face problems in the future.
