While reading materials on low-temperature pipelines, the term “cold bridge” was mentioned in the book; I’m not sure what it means. Could someone please explain it to me?
Cold bridges are also known as heat bridges; they are now uniformly referred to as heat bridges. A thermal bridge refers to reinforced concrete or metal beams, columns, ribs, and other elements located within the enclosure structures such as exterior walls and roofs. Since these areas have strong heat transfer capabilities, resulting in concentrated heat flow and lower temperatures on their inner surfaces, they are known as heat bridges. Common heat bridges include reinforced concrete seismic columns and ring beams located around the exterior walls, door and window lintels, reinforced concrete or steel frame beams and columns, the edge ribs or minor ribs in reinforced concrete or metal roof panels, as well as the metal frames and framing materials in metal and glass curtain walls and metal windows. For example, we all know that a thermos bottle has two layers – an inner layer and an outer layer – with air in between serving as an insulator. Due to the good insulating properties of air, if a wire is used to connect these two layers, heat energy will be conducted through this wire. This wire acts as a bridge for the transfer of heat energy, which is why it is called a heat bridge or cold bridge.
“A “cold bridge,” in simple terms, refers to rebar, metal supports, and similar elements that are connected to or in contact with low-temperature pipes. Due to their good heat transfer properties, they transfer heat to the pipes, which hinders the ability of those pipes to retain heat. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent the occurrence of such “cold bridges.”

What was mentioned on the third floor, namely that metals transfer heat to the pipes and this hinders heat retention, is not the most important thing! If the temperature of the medium inside the pipeline is very low, below -29 degrees, the steel beams and supports in contact with the pipeline can suffer from low-temperature brittle fracture, and this occurs without any prior warning. In some areas of Russia, if you take a hammer and hit an angle steel bar, it might break – a piece of it might fall off – and this is low-temperature brittleness. For beams, it means fracture; for pipe galleries, the structure collapses!
