What is the function of a retaining wall?

So, what is the difference between a guide wall and a retaining wall?
Before excavating the diaphragm wall, guide walls must be constructed first. These guide walls are temporary structures that are essential for building diaphragm walls. During construction, they are often subjected to static and dynamic loads such as those from rebar cages, concrete pouring pipes, and drilling machines; therefore, careful design and construction are necessary before proceeding with the actual construction of the diaphragm wall.
I really didn’t know much about guide walls; I learned about them through the moderator’s introduction.
