We have a 12,500 L closed glass-lined reactor with a high-neck flange having a diameter of 900 mm. This reactor is used for esterification reactions; sometimes it operates under a positive pressure of 0.2 MPa, and other times under a negative pressure of -0.09 MPa. The high-neck flange is slightly deformed; the flange sealing surface is not flat, and Teflon-asbestos gaskets are being used. It keeps leaking; can everyone suggest some good solutions?
One could consider wrapping some tape around the PTFE gasket!
Adjust the flange on the pipe to match that on the reactor; if the pipe is also lined with enamel, add half a gasket on the side with the larger gap and then wrap it with tape

The strength requirements of the high-diameter flange are more than sufficient to meet the usage requirements you mentioned. It is likely that the deformation of the flange was caused by the manufacturing process carried out by the manufacturer. If that’s the case, it’s possible to ask the manufacturer to identify the cause. A temporary solution is to wrap Teflon tape around the affected areas to increase their thickness; the permanent solution, of course, is to replace the flange, which will also require re-tinning

The raw tape is too thin; in such cases, we usually opt to use PTFE tape with a thickness of 0.2–0.3 mm for wrapping, applying more turns in the affected areas, which yields an excellent sealing effect.
