On page 207 of JB4732-95, in clause H1.2.4, item b: “Fully welded right-angled joint: ............. right angle.” The calculated weld thickness tc must be at least 70% of the smaller thickness of the joined parts, and shall not be less than 6 mm. ”However, the note in Figure H-5 states: “tc≥0.7δnt or the smaller of 6mm............”. Is this contradictory? How should it be understood?
The minimum is 6 mm; if the value calculated based on 0.7δnt is greater than 6 mm, then 0.7δnt shall be used.
However, in Part II of ASME Section VIII, it states that tc≥0.7δnt or the smaller of the two values, 6 mm; therefore, I believe the ASME specification should be followed.
Actually, the two statements above are consistent with each other as well as with ASME standards. It means that the height of the weld leg is tc = min(0.7 * the smaller thickness of the welded parts, 6), which is the same as what was stated earlier. According to ASME, it is 0.7 * the smaller thickness of the welded parts, taken together with 1/4 inch, and the smaller of these two values is used
Of course it’s inconsistent; “TC must be at least 70% of the smaller thickness of the welded parts, and must not be less than 6 mm.” ”It means the minimum thickness is 6mm ; However, the note states that “tc≥0.7δnt or the smaller of the two values: 6mm............”, which means it can be less than 6mm.
