Introduction to “If I Had My Life to Live Over”: “If Life Could Be Restarted” is a simple and sincere poem written by the author when he realized he would die of cancer. It tells us what is most important in this world for someone who is about to leave it. “If I Had My Life to Live Over” – by Erma Bombeck (Written after she found out she was dying from cancer.) I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending that the world would come to a halt if I wasn’t around. I would have burned the pink candle shaped like a rose before it melted away. I would have spoken less and listened more. I would have invited friends over for dinner, even if the carpet was stained or the sofa was faded. I would have eaten popcorn in the “nice” living room, worrying much less about dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace. I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather talk about his youth. I would have shared more of the responsibilities that fell on my husband’s shoulders. I would never have insisted on having the car windows rolled up on a summer day just because my hair had been styled and sprayed. I would have sat outside on the lawn, even with grass stains on me. I would have cried and laughed less while watching TV, and more while experiencing life itself. I would never have bought something just because it was practical, didn’t show dirt, or was guaranteed to last forever. Instead of wishing those nine months of pregnancy would pass quickly, I would have cherished every moment, realizing that the miracle growing within me was my only chance in life to help create a miracle through God’s power. When my children kissed me eagerly, I would never have said, “Later. Go wash up first for dinner.” There would have been more “I love yous” and more “I’m sorrys.” But most of all, if given another chance at life, I would savor every minute of it. I would look at it carefully and truly appreciate it. I would live it fully, without ever giving it away. Stop worrying about trivial things! Don’t worry about those who don’t like you, those who have more, or those who are doing certain things. Instead, let’s cherish the relationships we have with those who do love us. If life could be lived over again, I would rest when I was sick, rather than pretending that the world would stop turning because I wasn’t there. I will light that rose-shaped pink candle before it melts in the basement. I will speak less and listen more. I invite friends over for dinner at my place, even though my carpet is full of stains and my sofa has faded. I will eat popcorn in the clean living room, rather than worrying that someone trying to light the fireplace will see the untidied ashes inside it. I will take the time to listen to my grandfather ramble on about his experiences in his youth. I will share my husband’s burdens and help solve his problems. I will never insist that someone roll down the car window on a hot summer day just because my hair has been combed and sprayed with gel. I will sit on the lawn, even though the green grass will dirty my clothes. I will leave my tears and laughter to life, not to television. I won’t buy something just because it’s practical, dirt-resistant, and durable. I won’t wish for the pregnancy to end soon; instead, I will cherish every moment of being pregnant and carefully experience the growth of this miracle within my womb, because this is the only chance in my life to help God create a miracle. When my child kisses me for no reason, I will never say, “Wait a moment.” Now you need to wash your hands before eating. ” I will say “I love you” and “I’m sorry” more often. ” But more importantly, if life could be lived over again, I would cherish every minute. Look at it and experience it. Experience it, and you won’t give it up easily. Stop worrying over trivial matters! Don’t become depressed because of those who don’t like you or those who are richer than you; also, don’t worry about what others are doing. Let’s cherish the family bonds with those who love us.
