Our facility has two diesel pipelines (heavy diesel and light diesel), approximately 5 kilometers in length, used for transferring products. Due to changes in the raw materials used in the plant, heavy diesel is no longer produced, but the existing pipelines are still used for diesel transportation. Due to production needs, an additional liquefied gas pipeline is required. To shorten the construction period and reduce costs, it is planned to convert one diesel pipeline to carry liquefied gas as well (a distance of about 5 kilometers, with the same pressure level). It probably won’t work. The local safety supervision authorities may not agree. The hazard level of your current medium has significantly increased. Your pipeline grade is relatively low. It is not enough to have just the same pressure rating.
If the pressure rating is the same, there won’t be much of a problem. When in use, the pipeline should be cleaned to avoid affecting the quality of liquefied gas. At the same time, it is necessary to carry out pressure testing and leak detection, as well as ensure a reliable separation from the diesel system.
I agree with the view from the 3rd floor; since the pressure ratings are the same, they should be interchangeable.
After testing and through cleaning and replacement, it should be usable.
It’s not possible to simply say yes or no; first, one needs to know the material of the pipeline. Based on that material, the allowable stress at its design temperature is determined, and then calculations are carried out using the design pressure of the pipeline to determine whether the wall thickness of the pipeline meets the requirements for transporting gases. Rearrange, clean. Pressure testing and leak detection. There are basically no more problems.
