Generally speaking, the leading position of the supply branch pipe should be equal to or slightly lower than the elevation of the required circulating water heat exchange equipment. However, the position where the return water branch pipe merges into the main pipe must be above the top of the heat exchange equipment and slightly higher than the top elevation of the heat exchange equipment (that is, the highest point where circulating water flows through the heat exchanger) to ensure that the entire heat exchanger is filled with cooling water, thus ensuring the heat exchange effect.
Agree with lxq700918, the cooling water pipeline of the heat exchanger usually has a purge valve at the low point. I think in addition, the branch pipe should be led from the top or side as much as possible to avoid poor drainage during shutdown in winter.
Our water supply line is led out from the side, mainly because our main line is under the operating console and too close to the operating console. If it is led out from the top, it cannot be repaired.

The main consideration is that when the water supply pressure is insufficient, the main branch pipe will not be connected, which may cause insufficient water supply for the heat exchange equipment. ; But I think it is a bit far-fetched. At the same time, if the heat exchange equipment is above the main branch pipe, the branch pipe must be lowered to a lower point. If the heat exchange equipment is below the main branch pipe, it does not need to be lowered. Therefore, I tend to determine whether the branch pipe is led from above or below based on whether the heat exchanger is above or below the main branch pipe.
