I’ve been working on DCS projects recently, but I’m always unsure about which instruments to choose. So I’d like to ask everyone: what are some suitable flowmeters for measuring toluene? I recommend using a mass flow meter, with prices ranging from 50,000 to 100,000. Once the material of the measurement tube is determined, the price will vary depending on the diameter. The reason for this is that, since toluene tends to undergo chlorination to form benzyl chloride or trichlorobenzene, the material used is usually stainless steel. It is also necessary to take into account the corrosive effect of this toluene on stainless steel, as there must be no corrosion at all in a mass flow meter, as otherwise it will significantly affect the accuracy of measurements. The density of toluene does not need to be considered, as mass flow meters operate on the principle of Coriolis force; the measurement process is independent of the liquid’s density. In fact, density is itself a value that can be measured by a mass flow meter. And temperature compensation is also possible.
For example, the mass flow meter of E+H can achieve an accuracy of ±0.15%
Can a vortex flow meter be used? The manager said that the situation regarding toluene in vortex flow separators isn’t very good; some of the toluene recovered in our factory’s various production units contains a small amount of chloride ions. It is still recommended to use a mass flow meter, as it offers high precision and good stability. For domestic use, it is recommended to use products from Xi’an Dongfeng Electromechanical. It is recommended to use Rosemont and E+H products for imports.
A 1% requirement is not high; use a turbine. It costs around 2,000–3,000 RMB for half of that. It’s better to use stainless steel for the toluene pipeline
Use a mass flow meter. If cost isn’t a concern, opt for brands like SMC and E+H; a 1% accuracy level is more than sufficient

There is no need at all to choose those expensive flowmeters. Our company has used many flowmeters for benzene, and their service life has exceeded 10 years without any failures; their accuracy is 0.5%. (Rotary vane flowmeters are a good choice – they are produced by Chongqing Instrument Factory.) The cost-performance ratio is extremely high; if you are working with DCS systems and require high accuracy in flow measurement, pulse signals offer a better performance than 4–20MA signals.
