I remember there was a post in the forum earlier asking questions about 316L steel. I found some information on welding related to it, which I’m sharing here for that friend’s reference. 316L (including ER316LSi) filler metal should be used with 316L and 316 base metals. CF-8M and CF-3M are the cast equivalents of 316 and 316L, respectively. Brief introduction to 300 series austenitic stainless steels: The 300 series consists of austenitic chromium-nickel alloys. Type 301 – highly ductile, suitable for shaped products; it also hardens rapidly during mechanical processing. It has good weldability, as well as better wear resistance and fatigue strength compared to 304. Type 302 – has the same corrosion resistance as 304, but with slightly higher strength due to the presence of additional carbon. Type 303 – a version of 304 that is easier to machine, achieved through the addition of sulfur and phosphorus; it is also referred to as “A1” according to ISO 3506. Type 304 – the most common grade; it is the classic 18/8 stainless steel. It is also called “A2” per ISO 3506. Type 304L – the same as 304 but modified specifically for welding purposes. Type 308 – used as filler metal when welding 304. Type 309 – has better temperature resistance than 304; it is also sometimes used as filler metal when welding different types of steel, alongside Inconel. Type 316 – the second most common grade after 304; it is used in food and surgical applications. The addition of molybdenum to this alloy helps prevent certain forms of corrosion. 316 steel is used in the production and handling of food and pharmaceutical products, where it is often necessary to minimize metallic contamination. It is also known as marine-grade stainless steel due to its enhanced resistance to chloride corrosion compared to type 304. SS316 is frequently used in the construction of nuclear reprocessing facilities. Most stainless steel watches are made from Type 316L; Role* is an exception, using Type 904L. It is also referred to as “A4” according to ISO 3506. 316Ti – which contains titanium for improved heat resistance – is used in flexible chimney linings and can withstand temperatures up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, the highest temperature reached in chimney fires.
