The accuracy of measuring the bituminous matter layer (also known as the Y value). Now, for the same type of coal, the results obtained by different laboratory technicians using different testing equipment, or by the same technician using the same equipment, can sometimes vary. Laboratory technicians usually adjust the data based on their experience in order to ensure that the measurement results for the same type of coal are consistent. Measuring the maximum thickness of the gel layer does present certain difficulties; it relies entirely on the operator’s experience in determining the positions of the upper and lower surfaces, and it is normal for errors to occur. It is also important to plot the trajectory curves of these upper and lower surfaces, as this can help correct some of the measurement errors. Moreover, the distribution of the measurement points along these curves can be used to assess a technician’s skill level – technicians with higher skills will have their measurement points distributed more evenly along a smooth curve.
